The practice of Sharon Houkema explores how forms and styles acquire meaning within social, cultural, and ecological imaginaries. The work moves between critical autonomy and collective practices, often in dialogue with the physical and social environment.
Sharon Houkema graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2001 and completed a research residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in 2009. She was nominated for the Mama Cash Visual Arts Award and received the Volkskrant Visual Arts Audience Award.
Her practice includes installation, text-based, media-related, and participatory works. She realised solo projects at Museum Het Schip (Amsterdam), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), MU (Eindhoven), and Annet Gelink Gallery (Amsterdam), and participated in group exhibitions at institutions such as FACT (Liverpool), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), White Box (New York), CTM Festival (Berlin), and Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.
She also gave talks and contributed to publications, among others at Museo Experimental El Eco (Mexico City), ViaFarini (Milan), Omstand / Collectie De Groen, Kunstlicht, and Kulturo/LABAE.
She further worked on projects in public space with organisations such as Museum M, Into Nature, and Land Art Contemporary, and developed participatory and educational projects in collaboration with partners including De Diaconie and the Regenboog Groep.
Her work has been included in public and private collections, including the Fiorucci Collection, KRC, and LUMC.
